Do You Suck at Productivity? Here's how to suck less...

Do you ever find yourself caught in a cycle of procrastination, battling against unproductive habits? It's a common struggle many of us face. We set lofty goals and make grand plans, only to find ourselves neck-deep in distractions, feeling like time slips through our fingers. If this sounds familiar, don't worry; you're not alone. In this blog post, we'll explore the challenges of remaining productive and share practical strategies to help you break free from the cycle.

The Struggle is Real:

Picture this: It's late at night, and you're filled with remorse for wasting another day engrossed in Netflix and YouTube videos instead of making progress on your important tasks. Sound familiar? I've been there too. Every evening, I would berate myself for falling into the trap of mindless entertainment instead of pursuing my ambitions.

To combat this, I started making comprehensive to-do lists, meticulously outlining my tasks and their timelines for the next day. However, come noon, I would find myself behind schedule, lost in a sea of YouTube videos. Only to fall into the same cycle of hating myself for a while and saying…

“But tomorrow will be different!”

Does any of this sound a little bit too familiar?

The Solution:

The turning point for me was when I realized that my lack of productivity stemmed from not having a strong enough reason to do those tasks. It was crucial to establish a deep connection between my goals and the pleasure I would derive from accomplishing them, as well as the pain I would experience from further procrastination.

To break free from the cycle, I began by reflecting on my aspirations and dreams, and the impact I wanted to have in the world. I asked myself why those goals mattered to me and how they aligned with my values.

Because we often say things like: “I want more money.” But we really don’t just want pieces of paper with dead presidents, we want the freedom or options that money can give us. In other words, we don’t want the thing, we want how that thing will make us feel.

This process helped me establish a powerful "why" that served as a constant reminder and motivation. I made sure to surround myself with visual cues and reminders, such as sticky notes or vision boards, to keep my focus on what truly mattered. And it worked!

Falling in Love with Productivity:

Once I discovered my "why," working towards my dreams became more important and interesting to me than any YouTube video or Netflix series. It was no longer about ticking off items on a to-do list; it was about investing my time and energy in meaningful pursuits that aligned with my aspirations. And it was about becoming the kind of man I wanted to be.

In addition to establishing a strong "why," it's crucial to take stock of your time and use it efficiently. Here are a few practical strategies that helped me maximize productivity:

1. Make a full inventory of your time: Look at the time in a day, and how much of that you have at your disposal minus the hours in which you’re sleeping or eating. When I first did this I was amazed at the amount of time I had but was wasting on dumb things.

2. Eliminate distractions: Minimize potential distractions by turning off notifications, creating a dedicated workspace, and using website blockers or productivity apps. Create the perfect environment for productivity by making it fun and enjoyable for you.

3. Track your time and use it wisely: Schedule your time in such a way that allows you to be as productive as possible and to divide your time among the things that really matter to you. Make sure to include time for rest, and time for family and friends.

4. Seek accountability and support: Share your goals with a trusted friend, mentor, or accountability partner who can provide encouragement and hold you accountable and check back with them every week. The added pressure of having to show up every week with results helps keep you on track even when you don’t want to.

Remaining productive in today's world filled with endless distractions can be challenging. However, by discovering your "why" and aligning it with your actions can help you slowly but surely become the kind of person you can be proud of.

Remember to establish a strong reason to do the things you do and allow yourself to feel the pleasure of accomplishment and the pain that comes with procrastination in your mind. Take control of your time, use it efficiently, and watch as your productivity soars. You have the power to turn your dreams into reality – one focused, intentional step at a time.

PS. I’m sure by now you may have heard of the movie “Sound of Freedom” that’s causing a bunch of controversy. I made a video about it you can watch here, but regardless of politics I want all of us to do our best to help stop child trafficking and so if you’re able to give back to Operation Underground Railroad head on over to ourrescue.org and help end this terrible crime.
